Five changes expected in Twitter after Elon Musk’s $44B acquisition

1. Content moderation and free speech

Musk has regularly stated that Twitter’s content moderators interfere much too frequently on the network.

“Free speech is the backbone of a functional democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where crucial issues affecting humanity’s future are argued,” he said on Twitter.

The billionaire has urged for Twitter’s content limitations to be relaxed and has envisioned a network free of content monitoring.

One of the key motivations for his intention to purchase the firm, according to critics, is to circumvent its content control procedures.

2. The appearance of the Edit button

Twitter has stated that it is developing an edit button that would allow users to amend tweets after they have been sent.

The company’s vice president of consumer product, Jay Sullivan, stated that it has been “the most requested Twitter feature for many years.”

Users would be able to utilise the edit tool to correct typos or errors in a tweet without losing the responses, retweets, or likes it had previously received.

However, how to apply it while preventing misuse, such as modifying statements after others have retweeted or supported them, remains an issue.

3. Open-source algorithm of Twitter

The algorithm, or the piece of code that decides the priority with which tweets are presented to users, will be made “open source,” or available for the public to inspect and improve on.

Musk claims that this will help prevent “behind-the-scenes manipulation” such as fueling enormous foreign propaganda, as Facebook has been accused of doing during former US President Donald Trump’s campaign.

However, several analysts have expressed worry that Musk’s idea greatly oversimplifies the process of making data public and creates severe privacy problems.

4. Tackling cryptocurrency scams

Musk stated that one of his major priorities would be to eliminate “the spam and fraud bots and the bot armies that are on Twitter.”

The recommended answer is to authenticate “all genuine persons” or to have accounts openly connected to other personal identifiers, such as a phone number, email address, or picture.

Billy Markus, co-founder of Dogecoin, has complained to Twitter’s support staff about the network being saturated with giveaway crypto scams, in which bogus Twitter handles imitate notable crypto market personalities or significant celebrities.

5. Trump’s reappearance on Twitter

Trump has stated that he will not return to the microblogging network, even if Musk reinstates his account, preferring to stick with his own Truth Social platform.

Following the US Capitol riots on January 6, 2021, Trump was permanently suspended from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. His remarks were judged provocative, and Twitter issued a warning about the “potential of future instigation of violence.”
