Flying in or out of Dubai Airport (DXB) soon? Make sure your hand luggage meets airport security rules to avoid delays, confiscations, or fines
Dubai airport authorities have strict regulations on what you can carry in your cabin baggage, including liquids, electronics, power banks, and even certain personal items. Here’s what you need to know.
Security tips for smooth screening
To breeze through airport security:
-
Minimise metal accessories: Remove belts, watches, or jewelry before passing through the scanner and place them in the designated tray.
-
Mobile phones: You may pack up to 15 mobile phones in their original packaging. Personal devices are exempt. Extra phones may be confiscated due to lithium battery risks.
-
Liquids: Only carry what is necessary. Containers must not exceed 100ml each, and you can carry a maximum of 10 containers (1 litre total).
-
Medication: Must be accompanied by a prescription. Any metal medical devices implanted in your body require a doctor’s certificate.
-
Prohibited items: Lighters, flammable containers, toy weapons, and other dangerous items are strictly banned.
Banned items in hand luggage
Dubai International Airport prohibits the following items in cabin baggage:
-
All types of hammers, nails, and screwdrivers
-
Scissors with blades longer than 6 cm
-
Parts of personal grooming kits longer than 6 cm
-
Swords, sharp objects, and martial arts weapons
-
Handcuffs
-
Firearms, ammunition, and flare guns
-
Laser guns and walkie-talkies
-
Bats and drills
-
Ropes and measuring tapes
-
More than one lighter
-
Packing tape and most electrical cables, unless for personal travel use
Power bank rules on Emirates flights
From October 1, Emirates passengers will no longer be able to use power banks during flights and must remain switched off for the duration of the journey.
Why the restriction? Power banks contain lithium ions. If damaged or overcharged, they can overheat, cause fires, or release toxic gases, a risk airlines are now taking extra precautions against.
Upcoming security changes
Good news for frequent travellers: DXB is trialling state of the art checkpoint scanners from Smiths Detection.
These new scanners could soon allow passengers to pass through security without removing liquids over 100ml or laptops from their bags. While the full rollout date hasn’t been confirmed, trials are already underway, signalling a smoother security process on the horizon.
Tip: Always check the latest DXB regulations before you travel, as airport security rules can change. Being prepared ensures a stress-free journey through one of the world’s busiest airports.
