Sharjah is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and is widely recognized as the Cultural Capital of the Arab World (UNESCO, 1998). It stands out for its rich heritage, preserved traditions, educational museums, wetlands, mountain landscapes, and access to two different coastlines — a feature no other emirate has.

Sharjah offers a calm, traditional, family-friendly atmosphere while still being located just minutes from Dubai.

🌍 Geographic Overview

Sharjah has a unique geographic shape spanning both:

  1. The Arabian Gulf (West Coast) — where Sharjah City is located

  2. The Gulf of Oman (East Coast) — where Khor Fakkan, Kalba, and Dibba Al Hisn lie

This means Sharjah has coastal beaches, inland desert, fertile oases, and mountainous terrain all within one emirate.

Region Landscape & Features
West Coast (Sharjah City) Museums, souks, waterfronts, beach promenades
Central Oasis (Al Dhaid) Agriculture, fruit farms, desert plains
East Coast (Khor Fakkan, Kalba, Dibba Al Hisn) Beaches, coral reefs, mangroves, mountains
Desert Areas (Al Badayer / Al Madam) Dune driving, stargazing, desert camps

🗺️ Neighboring Emirates & Access

Sharjah borders all six other emirates, making it the most connected region in the UAE.

Nearby City Approx. Distance from Sharjah City
Ajman ~9 km
Dubai ~39 km
Umm Al Quwain ~29 km
Fujairah ~97 km
Ras Al Khaimah ~73 km
Abu Dhabi ~143 km

New transport improvements, such as the E308 Dubai–Sharjah bus route, have made regional travel easier.

Nature Reserves:

  • Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Centre

  • Khor Kalba Mangrove Reserve

  • Breeding Centre for Endangered Arabian Wildlife

These areas preserve Arabian oryx, foxes, reptiles, and migratory birds.

🌾 The Oasis of Al Dhaid

  • Located inland, Al Dhaid is known for fruit farms and date plantations.

  • A source of Sharjah’s agricultural heritage, supported by mountain-fed irrigation.

  • Focused on education, heritage, and community life over nightlife or luxury glamour

It is often viewed as the cultural heart of the UAE.
