In the latest Africa crypto news, Ghana will license crypto exchanges starting September 2025, as Luno introduces crypto staking services in Nigeria. DRC has released an e-diplôme platform that integrates blockchain for diploma verification.

Ghana has joined several African countries in enacting crypto regulations and has announced plans to license crypto exchanges starting in September. In Nigeria, Luno, a crypto exchange, has rolled out a staking service to attract more users. Meanwhile, the DRC is incorporating the blockchain to create a reliable database for government-issued diplomas.

These crypto stories and more dominate the continental headlines this week:

Ghana Crypto News: Central Bank to License Crypto Exchanges From September

The Bank of Ghana will begin licensing crypto exchanges by September 2025 if a regulatory framework currently in parliament is approved.

According to Johnson Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, licensing crypto exchanges will boost cross-border trading and attract strategic investment to the country.

This move aligns Ghana with other African nations enacting legislation to comply with international regulators like the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

The proposed guidelines will require crypto service providers to register and adhere to regulations. This includes minimum capital requirements and disclosure of suspicious transactions.

These changes position Ghana alongside countries, including Kenya and South Africa, with similar legislation.

Reports indicate that over 3 million of the 33 million people in Ghana actively use cryptos, even trading in some of the top Solana meme coins.

Ayotunde Alabi, CEO of Luno Nigeria, said the decision to launch staking services reflects Nigerians’ growing interest in alternatives to trading, focusing on building value by HODLing assets.

“We’ve evolved beyond speculation in hopes of earning rewards. People seek informed, safe, and rewarding alternatives, and staking offers that path. It represents a new phase of crypto adoption rooted in sustainability and utility.”

Staking allows crypto users to lock funds with a platform for yield, while the platform benefits from the additional liquidity of locked funds for operational needs.

Luno expects this feature to attract millions of Nigerians to its growing platform.

DRC Crypto News: DRC Integrates Blockchain for Diploma Verification

On July 18, the Democratic Republic of Congo released the e-diplôme platform, which integrates the blockchain to verify government-issued diplomas in real time.

This initiative addresses the need for a reliable verification system for academic certifications in the country.

Patrick Muyaya Katembwe, Minister of Communication and Media, said the e-diplôme platform marks a turning point in modernizing the Congolese education system.

“This major step toward transparency, modernization, and digital sovereignty positions the DRC’s education system as a model of governance in Central Africa.”

The e-diplôme platform uses blockchain technology to store and verify the authenticity of government diplomas. Blockchain remains underutilized for record-keeping and transparency.

This application extends beyond cryptocurrencies and could serve as a blueprint for governments and organizations seeking similar transparency.
