The Best Plants for a Low-Maintenance Garden

Everyone wants a beautiful garden, but what do you do when you don’t have that much spare time? Not everyone has hours free to tend to plants, trees, and lawns, but with a bit of planning, there are ways to have a stunning garden with minimal effort.

One of the easiest ways to achieve this is to choose the right plants. Picking wisely means your garden will pretty much take care of itself, which means less time maintaining it. To give you some ideas, here are some low-maintenance plants that will look great in your garden.

1. Bergenia

If you’re looking for an all-year-round color, Bergenia is a great choice. It has evergreen foliage and in spring it grows gorgeous pink flowers. Bergenia requires very little looking after, as it is frequently used to cover any patches of bare soil in elevated garden beds and planter pots.

2. Lavender

Lavender is another option for a low-maintenance plant. Lavender thrives in a range of conditions, including poor soil quality. It’s known for its fragrant purple flowers that attract bees and butterflies.

3. Boxwood

Boxwood is a popular choice if you have enough space in your garden for small shrubs. It’s one of the most versatile and low-maintenance shrubs and is tolerant to various soil types. It can also be pruned to maintain its shape, bringing evergreen foliage to brighten your garden all year.

4. Hardy Geranium

After looking for raised garden beds for sale, you might want to add a vibrant feel to your garden. hardy geraniums can be a fantastic way to do this. With their distinctive saucer-shaped flowers lasting from spring all the way until autumn, hardy geraniums are also very easy to care for. They will grow well in all kinds of weather conditions, including low levels of sunlight. Even with minimal care, they produce lots of foliage and blooms throughout the warmer months.

5. Sedum

Sedum can look amazing in elevated garden beds. As it originates in dry, rocky places, they are drought- tolerant and very easy to maintain. Despite this, they are beautiful to look at and are often used as an alternative to grass lawns or grown in outdoor containers in the summer.

6. Plantain lilies

With their distinctive leaves that come in all shades of green, the next plant on our list is plantain lilies. These are low-maintenance plants that can thrive in shady conditions. They have large, attractive leaves, can be grown in a variety of soil types, and are super-easy to care for.

7. Abelias

Abelias are another low-maintenance shrub that look amazing in the garden. They’re slow growing, so they don’t need much pruning. They’re green for most of the year and produce scented blooms in summer.

8. Swamp Magnolia

This is a low-fuss choice for an ornamental tree, and it’s perfect for lazy gardeners. It grows best in naturally moist soil with higher levels of acidity. If it’s kept in the right conditions, it will thrive with very little maintenance and doesn’t need much care.

9. Hydrangea Macrophylla

Hydrangea macrophylla is one of the easiest plants to grow. They can be grown in pots or garden beds, even if you have limited time. Just find some raised garden beds for sale and get started! These plants only need feeding with a slow-release fertilizer once or twice a year. They don’t need pruning very often, only occasional watering and they generally stay pest-free. Even with this small amount of care, you can still enjoy dazzling flowers that last all the way until autumn.

10. Wildflowers

If you don’t have time for pruning and tidying plants and flowers, wildflowers could be the perfect option. Wildflowers are supposed to look wild, so there’s less need for maintenance than there would be with ornamental flowers, and you can generally leave them to grow on their own. Simply buy a pack of wildflower seed mix, which are available in most gardening stores, and scatter the packet across the soil for a display of beautiful, colorful flowers during the summer months.
